Fertility Exam

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a minimally-invasive procedure performed to evaluate the uterus and fallopian tubes. Hysterosalpingography is primarily used to examine women who have difficulty becoming pregnant by evaluating the uterine cavity, fallopian tubes, and any scarring within the abdominal cavity. The presence of abnormalities within the tubes or uterus can dictate the type of fertility treatments that are used as well as the success rate and outcome of a pregnancy.

What Hysterosalpingogram Evaluates
  • Fallopian tube patency
  • Uterus abnormalities

How does the HSG test work?

An HSG test in New York City is a radiology exam to look at the structure of the uterine cavity and to determine if the fallopian tubes are unobstructed and are of normal size.

HSG is a quick, 5-minute office procedure and is performed on day 5-12 of the menstrual cycle after the bleeding has stopped but before ovulation.

Is an HSG test painful?

Patients may briefly experience uterine cramping during the procedure and some women may experience new cramping approximately 3-4 hours after the procedure. Taking over-the-counter pain medications prior to and after the procedure can help.

Can an HSG test evaluate the ovaries?

No, hysterosalpingography is designed to evaluate only the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes; it cannot be used to evaluate the ovaries or to diagnose endometriosis or fibroids.

What is fallopian tube recanalization?

Fallopian tube recanalization (FTR), also referred to as Selective Salpingography, is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure used to reopen blockages in one or both of the fallopian tubes. This low-risk procedure is typically recommended as the first intervention for patients with a blockage of the proximal fallopian tube – where the uterus meets the fallopian tube.

Dr. Silberzweig has also completed major research with multiple publications on minimizing radiation exposure and improving patient comfort, ensuring that your treatments will be safe and effective with minimal discomfort.

I was really nervous for the procedure but my experience here for an HSG was great. When the office staff called to confirm my appointment they informed me that because I hadn't met my deductible my copayment would be $250. I really appreciated them informing so I wasn't surprised when I showed up. The office was organized and clean. Dr. Silberzweig started the appointment on time and introduced himself before inviting me into his office. He explained the procedure including risks in his office. I was then shown to a dressing room where I was able to change into a gown and paper booties. When I went into the room for my procedure the nurse locked the dressing room to keep my personal belongings safe. Dr. Silberzweig explained things as he was doing them and had a great bedside manner. By the time I had dressed he had a copy of my results for me to keep and one sent to my referring doctor. I highly recommend Dr. Silberzweig!
