Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block
SPG block is an accepted, minimally invasive therapy for chronic headaches. This is a “needle-less” intranasal approach to the sphenopalatine ganglion, which is located in the back of the nasal cavity. This ganglion is located outside of the brain and as a result, is the only ganglion exposed to the environment. It also has very close connections with many nerves, including the trigeminal nerve.
How does the SPG block work?
Many studies have demonstrated that the SPG block is directly involved in the pathway of numerous forms of headaches and, when stimulated, can worsen symptoms and cause debilitating chronic headaches. By disrupting the function of the nerves in the SPG, it is possible to reduce facial pain and headaches, leading to significant improvement in symptoms and quality of life.
